The Commerce Department has chosen its first ever chief data officer, Navy veteran Ian Kalin. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker announced the hiring on March 13, at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

Kalin tweeted the news too.

"I have accepted an offer from @CommerceGov to be their first-ever Chief Data Officer. Very excited to serve my country again," Kalin tweeted.

Kaln was a Presidential Innovation Fellow, leaving the White House in 2013 to become director of open data at Socrata.
